When you find yourself with a roof problem, timeliness is one of the most important factors in getting it fixed. But it’s this timeliness factor that some roofing companies count on to take advantage of unsuspecting and trusting homeowners.
Are you a Class A Contractor?
Your state should have an agency like the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation that can verify a roofing company’s contractor status, as well as a Complaint History if one exists.
Are you a member of the Better Business Bureau?
If the roofing contractor is a member of the BBB, go online and check the BBB’s rating of the company, and also to learn if they have any legal complaints against them.
Are you insured? If so by who?
You don’t want to do business with a fly-by-night roofing company that will leave you high and dry is something goes wrong.
Does your work come with a warranty?
You should get at least a 5-year warranty on the repaired area, unless otherwise specified on your contract. Ask if you will receive this warranty in a written, legal document.
If any repair under warranty needs repair, what is your timeline?
You will want this answer to be “immediately." Good roofing companies stand by their work and are responsive.
Are there any roofs in my neighborhood or immediate area that you’ve recently done?
If you have time, it can only help to talk with one or two people who’ve done business with this roofing company. If the company cannot produce any past customers, you may want to steer clear of them. There’s plenty of roofing going on year-round, so identifying a few satisfied customers should not be a problem.
What is your price?
You don’t want a company that can roof your house for $700. This could cost you more money in the long run due to low quality work. A good rule of thumb is to get some quotes and start researching the middle prices.
Roofing problems are some of the worst dilemmas because homeowners have to quickly hire a roofing company. However, even though the clock is ticking, spend a few minutes running through these questions with your potential roofing company. They are easy, but important, questions that any legitimate roofing company should be able to answer with pleasure. If you meet resistant on any of these questions, move to the next roofing company on your list.
There are a lot of great roofing companies in your area, and a lot of shoddy ones – these questions will help you choose the right one.
